Council Background
The International Maritime Organization - is the United Nations specialized agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships.
SDG 14 aims to promote conservation and sustainable usage of the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development in human lives. Referring to Target 14.1, which aims to prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution, which aligned amazingly with our agenda: Addressing the Implications of Non-Essential Product Overconsumption on Marine Ecosystems, as it aims to reduce pollution in aquatic areas. Target 14.9, aims to support small scale fishers, aligns with The agenda: Protecting the Working Conditions for Seafarers in a Crisis of Global Labour Shortage, as it aims to protect workers rights in the midst of a labour shortage, ensuring the safety of seafarers for the upcoming future, including factors that may involve climate change, for example.
Agenda 1
Addressing the Implications of Non-Essential Product Overconsumption on Marine Ecosystems
Concerns the phenomenon of overconsumption through ongoing trends, where individuals purchase a large volume of items (such as blindboxes and popular collectibles), only to be thrown away very soon after, causing a major increase of waste in landfills. This is especially concerning when most items are now made with cheap, non-biodegradable materials that cause harm to the environment around them, and becomes an even larger concern when observing the rate in which these trends appear.
Agenda 2
Protecting the Working Conditions for Seafarers in a Crisis of Global Labour Shortages
Recognises the harsh environment faced by seafarers, while also recognising the lack of regulation in the maritime industry. Aims to solidify a safe environment for the workers, even in times of crisis. Without the workers of the sea, life below water is also endangered following the lack of activity and the absence of those who ensure the livelihood of the ecosystem.
