COUNCIL BACKGROUND

ASEAN+, or APT, is a council comprising of ten countries in South-East Asia plus China, South Korea and Japan. Its modern form was created in the wake of the 1997-98 Asian Financial Crisis, and currently is the main spearheader for the promotion of East-Asian cooperation. The Association adheres closely to the principles of the United Nations Charter, and aims to achieve different goals such as political stability, security and economic unity.

SDG8

The significance of international cooperation is emphasized in SDG 17. ASEAN+ seeks to eliminate regional poverty and foster economic growth within Southeast Asia. This is an ambitious goal that can only be achieved through strong partnerships between nations. ASEAN+ strongly embodies what SDG 17 desires to achieve, as it aims to promote unity for a more sustainable Southeast Asia.
